Marine Sound Deadening: FAQs

Yes. Butyl damping like Dynamat Xtreme converts panel vibration into heat, which is what cuts hull drumming, engine drone, and structure-borne noise. It reduces noise significantly, though no sound deadener can eliminate every source of noise. 

For a complete boat sound-deadening system, the Marine Combo Kit pairs Dynamat Xtreme butyl damping with DynaCore thermo-acoustic insulation in a single kit, controlling structure-borne vibration and absorbing the airborne sound that remains.

Work in two layers. First, cover the engine box lid, hatches, and bulkheads with Dynamat Xtreme to stop the metal from vibrating. Then add DynaCore over it to absorb remaining sound and block engine heat. 

The Marine and RV Combo Kits include both layers, so boat engine compartment insulation is mostly a matter of treating the right panels rather than sourcing materials separately. 

A two-layer system is the most effective approach. Use Dynamat Xtreme to damp vibration, then add DynaCore to block heat and absorb sound. Focus on the floor, cab-over, wheel wells, and generator bay, where most road noise and heat enter. 

The RV Combo Kit includes both layers, making it a complete RV sound-deadening solution for most coaches. 

Yes. Dynamat Xtreme's aluminum-faced butyl construction resists moisture and saltwater and is engineered for hot engine-bay conditions, while DynaCore is UV-resistant and rated to +350°F. Together, they provide durable, professional-grade performance that's built to last when installed correctly. These products have passed a 240 hour saltwater test derived from ASTM B117-19. 

Cover the largest, flattest panels first (engine box, hatches, floors, and hull sides), since they contribute the most vibration and noise. Full coverage isn't necessary. Treating about 60-80% of each panel controls most of the vibration, and covering the remaining bare areas adds little benefit. 

The combo kits are sized for typical engine-compartment and cabin projects. For larger vessels, add extra Dynamat Xtreme in bulk pack sizes.
